EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
