Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
