Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
